World Maths Day 'Murder' Mystery - Who ate the Gingerbread Man?
This is a whole school maths ‘murder’ mystery based around the maths objectives in each year group. It encourages teamwork, critical thinking, reasoning and problem solving. It is titled ‘Who ate the Gingerbread Man?’ to make it appropriate for all ages. There are a variety of clues for Reception through to Year 6. These are all independent and do not require other year groups to take part, the amount of discussions it created at our school makes it well worth getting everyone involved.
We started this by creating a police crime scene on the playground with the outline of the gingerbread man in the middle - this was ready for when the children were arriving at school - the buzz amongst the children was electric! All of the suspects were a mixture of staff around the school and even some of the Year Sixes that we knew would play along (You will need to put the names of your staff in there to make it engaging and more applicable to your school.)
We ended the morning with getting a police officer in to ‘arrest’ the suspect that they identified as the culprit, however this clearly isn’t necessary - it just topped off the whole event!
I hope you get as much from it as we did - thanks for looking!
