Mindful Me: Lesson Overview
This series includes seven engaging, age-appropriate lessons designed to support primary pupils in understanding their emotions, building resilience, and developing positive relationships. Each lesson uses discussion, games, and creative activities to make mental health accessible, safe, and meaningful for young learners.
Lesson 1: Feelings Detectives – Understanding Emotions
Pupils learn to recognise, name, and talk about a range of emotions. Through stories, visual prompts, and class discussion, children explore how feelings can change and how to spot emotions in themselves and others. Activities include emotion-matching games, sharing circles, and creating a class feelings chart.
Lesson 2: Worry Warriors – Managing Anxiety and Worries
This lesson introduces the idea that everyone has worries and teaches simple, practical calming strategies. Pupils take part in breathing exercises, create a “worry box,” and discuss what helps when they feel nervous or unsure. The focus is on reassurance, normalising worry, and building coping skills.
Lesson 3: Sadness & Support – Understanding Big Feelings
Children explore sadness as a natural emotion and learn how to ask for help. Through storytelling and gentle discussion, pupils identify trusted adults and ways to support friends who may be feeling low. Activities promote empathy, kindness, and recognising when to talk to someone.
Lesson 4: Super Self-Esteem – Celebrating Strengths
This lesson focuses on confidence and positive self-image. Pupils reflect on their strengths, talents, and qualities through creative tasks such as “All About Me” posters and compliment circles. The aim is to help children recognise their value and speak positively about themselves.
Lesson 5: Friendship Builders – Developing Social Skills
Pupils explore what makes a good friend and how to build positive relationships. Through role play and group discussion, children practise sharing, including others, listening, and resolving small disagreements. The lesson promotes respect, empathy, and teamwork.
Lesson 6: Anger Avengers – Managing Strong Emotions
This session helps pupils understand anger and learn safe, healthy ways to express it. Children identify physical signs of anger and explore calming techniques such as counting, breathing, and taking space. The focus is on emotional regulation and making safe choices.
