An highly relevant high school reading comprehension resource for learning about ChatGPT and the implications of Generative A.I. for society. Students using this resource will read a non-fiction text about ChatGPT and how machine learning is now capable of doing complex tasks that once only humans could do. They will explore the topic further through a variety of scaffolded tasks that help students build life-long reading skills while keeping interaction in the lesson high. Students will also learn new academic vocabulary words with a series of vocabulary activities relevant to the topic. At the end of the lesson, students are given a chance to synthesize what they learned about Generative A.I. by writing about ChatGPT in an Opinion Essay. There is also a debate task about the topic along with handouts that can help students set up this debate in class. The scaffolded activities & included lesson plan is designed to create independent readers by gradually allowing the teacher to release control so students can grow to become more self-directed in their learning.
