This page will generate Pythagoras questions with whole number answers. The answer can be typed in and marked by the computer. The question includes a labeled diagram. The student needs to properly understand which side is the hypotenuse since the diagram can be shown in various orientations – including when the hypotenuse is horizontal. I’m building a collection of such resources. Let me know what you think works and what doesn’t – I will try and improve! (Link is given in presentation)

5 questions on Adding fractions Fractions of amounts Solving equations with unknown on both sides Finding the mean of a list of numbers Listing the first five terms of a sequence given the nth term formula There are eight copies of this starter, each with different numbers in the question. I use them as periodic revision of topics. Having different questions, but all in the same format, helps since if a student can’t solve one on their own then they can follow a worked example and get the answer for their version of the question.

The aim here was to encourage students to focus on “what can I work out?” rather than to focus on the final aim of the question. As such: the first two slides can be skipped so the students start by looking at the diagram and are invited to think about what is presented. The diagram illustrating Pythagoras’ theorem is from a presentation I found on TES, sorry: I don’t remember which. The picture in slide 18 is from melloo.co.uk which allows for non-commercial use. I removed a picture from the final slide, but have left a link in the slide comment – I use the picture in class, but it is probably not public domain.
