Religion and Philosophy - 'The Truman Show' (1998)

(5)
There’s a tonne of stuff out there on ‘The Truman Show’, and I only realised after I had done all of this - so if you’ve seen it before or it crosses over with anything else you’ve downloaded than it was unintentional and I apologise. So, ‘The Truman Show’ (1998) (rated PG) is part of what RE teachers call ‘The Carrey Creed’ the other two being ‘Bruce Almighty’ (2003) & ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ (2004). The film is brimming with religious and philosophical ideas, most of which I’ve probably missed but I have flung a few at some tasksheets , cobbled some PowerPoints together plus a timing sheet so you know when everything pops up. Healthy Eating - 'Super Size Me' (2004)

Morgan Spurlock's 'Super Size Me' (2004) is beautifully simple concept; what happens if you eat nothing but 'McDonald's' food for one month? I've split the movie into two, there is a PowerPoint and a task sheet for each half. As always, you'll find the best way of adapting it and playing around with the resources - which is kind of the point really. The movie is rated 12. By the way, normally I like to do a 'timeline' for movie resources but I wasn't able to this time. Sorry. Thankfully, the movie is divided into chapters like 'Toxic Environment' and 'Addiction' as well as the various 'days' which makes it quite nice to navigate. Religions in the UK & Rites of Passage - 'Being...' (2021)

‘Being…’ is a BBC television show that explores rites of passage in Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism & Sikhism. It is completely brilliant; showing how in contemporary Britain these faiths mark significant stages in life. I have put together some very, very basic task sheets (those of you that have used my resources before know that I am prone to the odd typo - so please be careful) I have made sure that all the key words that appear on the screen during the episodes are on the sheets either as facts, or as questions. I hope they are of some use to you. Journalist Shehab Khan investigates the meaning of Ramadan; he speaks to Muslims in the UK about what the month means to them and the significance to their lives. This is a very simple and linear tasksheet - as always I do check but apologies for any spelling errors.

'Big Gay Wedding with Tom Allen' (2024) - Tasksheet

‘Big Gay Wedding with Tom Allen’ is a charming documentary where Tom Allen arranges a same - sex wedding; crucially though as Tom helps with sourcing a cake and booking entertainment for the event he explores the history of gay marriage in the UK. Tom’s affable charisma makes him a relaxed interviewer, and he meets a wide range of people who were involved in campaigning for equal rights for same-sex couples, including the Prime Minister at the time Lord Cameron, and the prominent campaigner Peter Tatchell. The tasksheet is a simple, linear affair and if you have downloaded any of my resources before than please be mindful of spelling and grammar issues - I do check but they still sometimes slip through!

Zara McDermott investigates the challenging topics of revenge porn and rape culture in these powerful, and deeply personal documentaries. The shows contain strong language and stories that some may find distressing including suicide. The tasksheets are very simple, and also have links to external sites. I do hope that you find them of use. Farnyfun

The Death and Resurrection of Jesus - Christianity - 'Risen' (2016)

It’s a bit rough and ready, (the resources, not the movie) but basically using the film ‘Risen’ with Joseph Fiennes you can hopefully get a different viewpoint on the crucifixion of Jesus. I’ve split the movie into three parts, for three one hour lessons. Obviously we all adapt/edit etc according to our taste and circumstances. - so you could do it over two, watch the film in lesson and then set task sheets as homework and so on. The film is a ‘12’ certificate. By the way, the title is a plot spoiler… For more resources and ideas please visit https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDetdK3oiQBDceVd3uV_sGg

‘The Prince of Egypt’ from Dreamworks Studios, is an animated interpretation of the life of Moses. It features an amazing voice cast; Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Sandra Bullock, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jeff Goldblum all contribute magnificently to the story. Enclosed is a timeline of the movie, tasksheets and slideshows. I’ve divided the movie into three lessons, assuming 1 hour a lesson - you will of course adapt/mutate according to your circumstances. Hope the resources are of some use. Enjoy Your Learning! Farnyfun

Teachings of Buddhism - 'Groundhog Day' (1993)

(1)
‘Groundhog Day’ (1993) is a stonecold classic, Bill Murray is peerless as sarcastic weatherman Phil, who finds himself inexplicably repeating the same day over and over. I’ve thrown together a few bits and bobs that connect the film to Buddhism. As with all of my resources, there will be spelling mistakes and typos so please be careful. You will know best how to deliver the resources, and you will mix and match as you see fit. Your students will never hear Sonny and Cher’s ‘I’ve got you babe’ in quite the same way again either… For more resources and ideas please visit https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDetdK3oiQBDceVd3uV_sGg

‘Love, Faith and Me’ is a BBC television show that explores love and marriage in Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism & Sikhism. Each episode is very personal and all those featured are honest and open about their life journeys. I have put together some very, very basic task sheets (those of you that have used my resources before know that I am prone to the odd typo - so please be careful) I have made sure that all the key words that appear on the screen during the episodes are on the sheets either as facts, or as questions. The episodes, alll available on the BBC iplayer are: Episode 1: ‘My Hindu Coming Out Story’ Episode 2: ‘Dating, Halal Style’ Episode 3: ‘Our Supersized Christian Family’ (Please be aware, shows a brief scene of a medical procedure) Episode 4: ‘Married, Sikh and Wanting a Baby’ (Please be aware, refers to miscarriage and also a scene of someone having an injection) Episode 5: ‘The Highs and Lows of a Kosher Marriage’ I hope they are of some use to you. Sexual Violence & Consent & RSE - 'Promising Young Woman' (2020)

A resource for exploring the issues of rape, sexual violence and consent. ‘Promising Young Woman’ (2020) is Emerald Fennell’s writer/director debut, and features an astonishing performance by Carey Mulligan. The film is a ‘15 Certificate’ The resources contain a timeline, and slidehows/tasksheets that assume roughly three 60 minute sessions. Of course, you know your school/college best and can edit/adapt accordingly. The slideshows reference the recent OFSTED report ‘Review of sexual abuse in schools & colleges’. Also included are references to ‘I just thought it was part of life’ - a significant report that highlights the abuse received by women and girls in the UK. I would also recommend exploring other works by the report authors, Taylor & Shrive - they are superb.

The ‘Breadwinner’ is an astounding piece of animation, telling the story of a young girl brought up under the rule of the Taliban in 2001. Please find enclosed some lesson reources to help explore some of the issues of the movie including dress code in Islam and arranged marriage. If you have downloaded my movie resources before, you know that I provide a simple timeline of the key events, a PowerPoint and a tasksheet. I split the film into two halves, but you know your students best and of course can adapt and adjust accordingly. The film is rated ‘12’. I do hope you find it of use.
