Day of the Dead – Key Stage 3 Art & Design Scheme of Work
Introduce students to the vibrant visual culture of Mexico’s Day of the Dead festival through this engaging Key Stage 3 Art & Design project. Students explore the festival’s imagery, decorative symbols, colour and traditions, using their research to inspire their own creative responses.
The scheme of work develops students’ drawing, design and making skills through a range of practical activities. Students investigate facial proportions, create original decorative skull designs, experiment with symmetry and asymmetry, explore pattern and colour, and develop their ideas using coloured paper and paper-engineering techniques. The project also offers the opportunity to create a three-dimensional skull using modelling clay.
Included in this resource:
A structured scheme of work with learning objectives and suggested teaching sequences.
Guidance for creating a research page, including a student-friendly checklist.
Practical drawing activities focusing on facial features, proportion, line and shape.
Skull-design challenges to encourage creativity, experimentation and independent thinking.
Opportunities to explore colour schemes, decorative patterns and culturally relevant symbols.
Paper technology and pop-up techniques, with suggestions for teachers to make or source suitable demonstrations.
A three-dimensional clay-making activity.
Assessment-for-learning opportunities, peer discussion and reflection.
Support, extension and differentiation suggestions to help teachers adapt the project to their classes.
Optional prompts using the DrICE framework to support lesson planning and challenge.
The resource is designed to help teachers deliver a practical, skills-based project that combines research, drawing, design and three-dimensional making. It can be adapted to suit different class abilities, available lesson time and materials.
