Skills Remix - Employability

Skills Remix is a fun, imaginative and highly effective session designed to help learners or job seekers explore transferable skills, build confidence, and rethink how they approach job searching/career goals. Instead of focusing on themselves (which can feel overwhelming or limiting), learners/job seekers create a fictional character using five quick-fire prompts, from Olympic sports to clothing design. They then work as a group to determine the potential skills, interests and job options before reflecting on how the same thinking applies to their own career journey. What This Resource Helps Learners Do Identify transferable skills without pressure Build confidence by practising giving advice to someone else Make connections between interests, personality and work Challenge limiting beliefs about their own abilities Generate practical next steps for job searching What’s Included Full activity instructions Clear timings for each stage Discussion prompts A structured debrief to deepen learning Example character with suggested traits Facilitator crib sheet for smooth delivery All together in one document Perfect For Careers lessons Employability workshops PSHE / Life Skills Post‑16 tutorials Alternative provisions i.e. WHP/Restart/Work Programme Youth groups and mentoring sessions Suitable for KS4, KS5 and adult learners. Why It Works Learners often find it easier to recognise strengths and opportunities in others than in themselves. This activity uses that natural tendency to help them see their own potential. It’s creative, low‑pressure and consistently sparks insightful conversations. Session Length Approx. 20–30 minutes, depending on group size (Perfect as a standalone activity or part of a wider careers programme) plus it’s flexible enough for you to change the original fictional character using subjects close to your caseload/learner lives. Tried and tested on various age groups.

For teachers, Support Staff and all those in-between and around. Clearing out is usually an ‘end of term’ task but it should be an ongoing process. This workbook is set out in sections from digital to finances with hints and tips on things you may need to do, can do and absolutely should do to halt overwhelm and make a difference to sustainability, yes, you read that right! This is more about home and personal life than school/college life because we sometimes neglect the life part of work/life balance, I know I did, which is where this came from. It’s a short read with a process as short or as long as you need. If you have emails that are clogging up your inbox, or drawers full of ‘I’ll find a home for that later’ or even, ‘Why did that money just leave my account? I don’t remember signing up for that!’ …this is for you.
