The Renewable Energy Icebreaker

The DfE Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy (2022) highlights the importance of giving young people both accurate knowledge about climate change and hope that they can make a difference. Education should help students understand the science while also empowering them to take action and explore future green career pathways. This interactive icebreaker introduces key ideas about renewable energy, including: What green energy and clean power mean How electricity generation is measured (e.g., gigawatts) The role of wind power in the UK’s energy mix Global progress towards renewable electricity Designed for students in Years 11–13, the activity works well in cross-curricular settings such as science, RE, philosophy, PSHE, or careers education, and can also be used with adult or community groups.
