TCH 2-02b Topic investigation worksheets for primary pupils to develop research skills, ask questions, use books and websites, record sources and present findings. This could be the first part of a lesson before making a poster about the topic. This resource contains two printable A4 Topic Investigation worksheets, designed to help pupils move beyond simply searching a topic title and instead plan purposeful questions before beginning their research. Both worksheets guide children through choosing an overall topic, creating three questions or subtopics, researching each one using books and online sources, recording what they discover in their own words, and noting where their information came from. The pack includes a more illustrated, child-friendly version for First Level and a cleaner, more mature version for Second Level pupils, which also includes a short reflection section. This makes it useful for reusing a similar lesson format at different level as you work with different classes. Ideal for “I can investigate…” E&Os across curriculum areas. I have used it in science and social studies and interdisciplinary learning (IDL) based lessons. These worksheets can be used to ‘investigate’ a topic using laptops or encyclopedias and non-fiction books. This could also be used in conjuntion with a project related to a library visit. This worksheet was created in response to working an investigate E&O and finding some children typed the topic title into Google on the laptop and then copied the AI summary into their work. By slowing down and considering the topic and the questions and ideas they had before investigating and then also thinking about the idea of ‘sources’ of information we were able to improve the depth and interest of the posters created and encourage thinking about which websites might have better information about a topic and whether we might have a book in the classroom that could also have useful information. The black-and-white design is printer-friendly and easy to photocopy.
