FREE Year 3 History Reading Comprehension Resource – Feedback Welcome!
This is a FREE Year 3 History reading comprehension resource, designed to combine History curriculum knowledge with the development of key reading and comprehension skills.
The resource includes:
• An illustrated PowerPoint to support whole-class teaching and discussion.
• A History-themed reading text suitable for Year 3 pupils.
• Expected Level comprehension questions, covering a range of reading skills and domains.
• A Greater Depth version, providing additional challenge for more confident readers.
• An adapted SEND version, with simplified text and appropriately scaffolded questions to make the learning more accessible.
• Teacher answers to support marking and discussion.
The aim is to provide a resource that can be used flexibly within a Year 3 reading/comprehension session, guided reading or as an independent activity. It also provides opportunities for pupils to develop their historical knowledge while practising important reading skills such as retrieval, inference, sequencing, vocabulary and explanation.
Why is it free?
I’m currently developing a range of curriculum-linked comprehension resources linked to each of the KS2 History topics, and I would really value feedback from teachers who use them with their classes.
Rather than simply putting the resources out there, I’d love to know how well they actually work in the classroom.
If you download and use this resource, please consider leaving a review or some feedback. In particular, it would be really helpful to know:
• What worked well with your pupils?
• Were the Expected, Greater Depth and SEND levels appropriate?
• Were the texts and questions pitched correctly for Year 3?
• Did the PowerPoint support the teaching effectively?
• Was the resource easy to use?
• Is there anything you would change, add or improve?
• Would you find more History curriculum-linked comprehension resources like this useful?
Constructive feedback is very welcome. Your comments will help me refine and improve future resources so that they are genuinely useful, practical and manageable for teachers in the classroom.
Thank you for downloading, and I hope you and your Year 3 pupils enjoy using it!
