What’s Getting in the Way? is a free practical KELUXA Education resource designed to help education professionals move beyond surface behaviour and explore what may be creating a barrier to access, engagement or regulation. Rather than asking “How do we stop this behaviour?” the Barrier Explorer supports staff to ask: “What might be getting in the way and what can we change?” The six-page printable resource guides staff through a simple reflective process: Describe what you notice - separating observation from interpretation. Explore possible barriers - including sensory load, processing and communication, executive functioning, demand/anxiety/autonomy, predictability, regulation and capacity, learning access, physical needs, social safety and environmental/system barriers. Hear the child or young person - with practical ways to gather CYP voice without relying solely on immediate verbal explanation. Match the response to the barrier - practical strategies to try, alongside responses that may unintentionally add pressure. Try → Review → Adapt - test support as a hypothesis and review whether it improves access rather than simply producing quieter behaviour. The resource includes a lived-experience lens throughout and is designed to support neuroaffirming, trauma-informed and curious practice. Suitable for teachers, SENDCos, pastoral staff, learning support staff, behaviour/inclusion teams and other education professionals working with children and young people.
