Used with a Year 9 set. I have found it difficult to engage students when teaching the vocabulary of algebra, so tried this activity with them. I have included a list of definitions (tailored to use more student-friendly language), which students referred to when completing the activity - I have not included the equivalence sign in the identities, to challenge the students a little more. It raised some interesting questions about the use of "Equation of a Line" for "y = mx + c", and whether that really was an equation, or a function.

A very comprehensive set of slides which could be used for displays in a Maths area. The information comes from the lovely posters at Mumsnet, who were asked whether they used maths in their jobs, and to describe what they did. I have pretty much copied and pasted the replies, correcting only for SPaG and putting all quotes into the first person, so there are several duplicates (e.g. nurse, solicitor). Hopefully it will help students and parents to understand the context of maths outside of the classroom environment! UPDATE September 2019. I printed each treasure hunt on different coloured paper and let the students choose which they wanted to start on. I used this as a whiteboard starter activity with a Year 9 middle attainment set. Students are given five scenarios - in each scenario they must choose whether they would prefer one of two options. Students are required to compare fractions, decimals or percentages of different amounts in each case. This activity was useful for assessing student recall of the topic from Year 8 and helped to shape what revision needed to be done in the introductory lesson of the topic.

Used as a starter exercise at KS3 and lower attainment KS4, with students working on whiteboards. A single Powerpoint slide, starting with Billy, who is x years old. Information is then given about different members of Billy's family, and the students must work out the expression which would represent their ages.

I used this activity with a high attaining Year 8 class. Each student was given a slip, with the answer to one question leading onto the question for the next. It got the students thinking about real life masses, lengths and capacities and was a fun (and rowdy!) session.
