This work booklet is designed for students to complete an in-depth analytical study of the 2020 Netflix docu-drama ‘The Social Dilemma’. The booklet is split into 4 sections, with a total of 30 questions designed to encourage students to interpret the use of various techniques in the docu-drama and explore the potential effects on the audience. The booklet also includes a glossary of the features of the genre, a guide to camera shots and angles, and an overview of the characters and subjects of the documentary. The booklet is designed for us in the IB MYP curriculum, but is very easily adaptable for any English-language curriculum.

This is a booklet designed to help students analyse the BBC Newsround documentary ‘Empire and Me’. Complete with timing prompts and a range of different questions and activities, the booklet aids students in thinking critically about how the director of the documentary has used features to portray perspectives on the impact of British colonial rule in Ghana. The activities are based on the IB MYP global context of Fairness and Development and the key concept of Perspective. However, this booklet is easily adaptable for any curriculum with universal questions focusing on the content and features of documentary, as well as the topic of colonialism.

This unit lasts between 8-10 weeks and involves an in-depth study of context, character, setting and theme. There is a strong focus on intertextuality; students are guided to track the symbols, motifs and allusions of the story, all the while considering authorial intent and the wider concept of allegory. The presentation guides students through the text with a range of activities, including research and group work, close analysis, PEA paragraph writing and more. The unit is designed for the MYP curriculum (includes statement of inquiry, factual, conceptual, and debatable questions, and a summative GRASPS assessment). However, the skills covered in the unit (comprehension, inference and deduction, analysis and evaluation) are transferable to any other English KS3 curriculum.

A full unit including: 44-slide PowerPoint presentation, various extra resources and extracts from biographies and autobiographies, assessment task and a unit reflection. This unit is designed for IB MYP Language and Literature, but it can be very easily adapted and used for any KS3 class. It covers skills in reading and writing in particular (communication skills and creative thinking skills). The unit lasts for roughly 6-7 weeks. It includes a statement of inquiry, inquiry questions, approaches to learning and assessment task in the ‘GRASPS’ format. The unit begins by encouraging students to understand various concepts, including identity, relationships, communication, genre and context. It then goes on to introduce students to various examples of biographical and autobiographical writing, such as ‘I Am Malala’ (Malala Yousafzai) , ‘Twin Ambitions’ (Mo Farah), ‘Boy: Tales of Childhood’ (Roald Dahl) and many more. Students will explore and analyse the conventions of the genre, looking at how writers express identity using language and other features. The unit then guides students through an exploration of aspects of their own identity, before planning and producing their own assessed piece of autobiographical writing.

A fully-resourced, 8 week scheme of work based on the collection of short stories by Amnesty International: Free? Stories Celebrating Human Rights. This scheme was designed as a unit for the IB MYP, but it is very easily adaptable to be used in any KS3 classroom or any other English curriculum. The scheme includes a 78-slide PowerPoint presentation, plus additional documents and resources including worksheets for videos, planning for the final assessment and more. The unit introduces students to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights before exploring all 14 stories in the collection, looking at aspects of context, character and theme, and applying the statement of inquiry. There are a range of tasks including comprehension, inference and analysis. The writing focus of the unit is persuasive writing. Students are guided through a formal letter writing task before the unit culminates in the writing and delivery of a persuasive speech, focusing on one of the human rights issues from the story collection.
