I made this presentation / lesson for science week in my German lesson. It aims at explaining how modern English developed from Germanic languages, also taking into account Viking and Norman influences. This pack contains a powerpoint, a script and a worksheet with an application task of the High German Consonant shift: Guess the English word for this German word. No knowledge of German is required for this lesson.

This sentence builder, directed at GCSE German students, enables students to make sentences such as “Ich esse kein Fleisch, denn ich bin Vegetarierin”, or “Ich esse jeden Tag Schokolade, weil es mich gluecklich macht, aber es ist nicht gesund, weil es viel Fett und Zucker enthaelt und Uebergewicht verursacht.” It gives the option to use either co-ordinating conjunctions (“denn” and “aber”), or sub-ordinating conjunctions (“weil” and “obwohl”). It comes with a Powerpoint to introduce (or re-activate) the food and drinks in the Sentence builder, as well some other aspects such as tastes and nutritional contents.

Giving an introduction to the German A-Level topic of architecture, this bundle contains a vocabulary list, a Powerpoint featuring a selection of German / Austrian architecture (e.g. Porta Nigra, Plattenbauten, Bauhaus, Hundertwasser…) with some explanatory sentences, mainly in the passive voice. The worksheet gives an overview of the use of the passive voice and some tasks practicing architecture vocab in conjunction with the passive.

For A-Level German, covering the final scene of the film “Good bye, Lenin”. The first resource is a transcript of Staatsratsvorsitzener Jaehn’s speech, and some analytical questions. The second is the GDR’s national anthem, “Auferstanden aus Ruinen”, which is played in the background of the speech, and some analytical tasks, finally comparing anthem and speech. For these tasks, a very high level of understanding of the GDR’s history is required.

I have developed a question catalogue for the German A-Level reader “Der Vorleser”, 3-6 questions for each chapter. The page numbers refer to the “Diogenes” edition (with Kate Winslet on the title page). The document also contains a compilation of exam questions from various exam boards.

This resource contains a graph explaining the semantic roles of the cases and the sentence structure, gives a paradigm for definite and indefinite articles and a translation task (incl. answers) (N.B. The sentence structure given in the graph (nominative subjct - verb - dative object - accusative object) is not the only correct alternative, but it is the most standard one)

This worksheet gives a short explanation when the imperfect tense is used, the imperfect forms of “haben”, “sein”, “wollen” and “muessen” and a gap fill activity for these words, topic: holdiays.
