6 Music Schemes of Work aimed at Y8

7 Resources
These 6 SOW are the ones I use for my Y8 classes, and are all uploaded on TES separately. However, if you would like to purchase a year's worth of work for your students you can buy all 6 together here, plus a piano music booklet, for £25 instead of the usual total of £45! Some SOW have more files than others, namely that the SOW may mention sheet music that is not included. This is for copyright reasons if I have downloaded sheet music myself from TES in the past to base my work on. If there are any issues with opening files please get in touch.

AQA GCSE Music new specification - WAGOLL answers for Haydn's 'The Clock'

This sheet contains 8 mark answers for 2 possible questions on Haydn’s ‘The Clock’ symphony movement 2, to help students revise the key points needed for section B of the written paper. I have tried to cover all the musical elements in these answers, and to show that many similar points can simply be revised and edited for different questions.

Storytelling and Shadow Puppets - A Drama SOW aimed at Y7

(0)
This SOW is based on 5 lessons, but could be extended if need be. It is based on using narrative poems in drama, first with physical drama, then with shadow puppets. Each group in a class is given a poem to work on, culminating in a shadow puppet performance in the last lesson. Some poems may not have enough characters who are referred to in the text itself (The Raven, for example), but the students usually use their imagination to incorporate ghosts or other creatures into the story! The poems included are as follows: Cinderella - Roald Dahl (for a whole class task in the first lesson) The Raven - Edgar Allen Poe Little Red Riding Hood - Roald Dahl The Jabberwocky - Lewis Carroll The Walrus and the Carpenter - Lewis Carroll Goldilocks and the Three Bears - Roald Dahl Three Little Pigs - Roald Dahl Obviously, any narrative poems could be used for this SOW. I chose ones that suited the students at my school but there are many out there that could also be suitable. One of the homework tasks asks students to watch a version of the poem their group have been assigned on youtube. I have included a document with suggested links. Any problems, please contact me.

AQA GCSE Music new specification: Area of Study 1 - Western Classical Tradition 1650-1910 SOW

(0)
This is a complete SOW that I used with my Music GCSE class lasting a full term. I have attached all the resources I used, including the music clips for the end of term exam. The SOW covers all four topics within this AoS, incorporating all three components of the course. The students will learn about music from the Western Classical Tradition up to 1910 through listening to music, composing in the styles heard and performing music of this period. A few notes on lessons involving sheet music: -The lessons referring to learning Haydn's 'The Clock' used the sheet music on the AQA website. -For the lesson on 'Unto us a child is born' I did not like to attach the music in case I breached copyright, but I found it on Google by searching 'Unto us a son is born Handel'. I found using a couple of pages only was enough for the tasks. -The lessons on the piano music of Chopin and Schumann refer to four pieces by them for the students to practice. Again, I did not like to attach them here but I found them in piano teaching book series' such as John Schaum and John Thompson. -For the Facebook profile tasks for the last topic I found the page templates on TES. If there are any problems with any of these files please contact me and I will resolve them as best I can.

Peter and the Wolf - A Y7 SOW aimed at teaching the Instruments of the Orchestra

(0)
This SOW uses the 1946 version of Peter and the Wolf to teach students about the instruments of the orchestra. I have attached the video link used, and a booklet to accompany the SOW. Please note that the booklet includes written work intended for the first two lessons of the SOW, as it is intended that the rest of the term will be taken up with students doing practical and composition work. The video link included in the resources is now out of date I have been informed. I have attached a usable one here: https://www.cornel1801.com/disney/Make-Mine-Music-1946/film6.html

It has SOW for AoS 1 and 2 for the Understanding Music component, a skills audit and strand breakdown and an example of a canon. The latter fits in well with the AoS 1 work. The final end of year exam is based on AoS 1, 2 and 3. There are also some resources for AoS4, and some feedback sheets.

SOW on Films and Musicals aimed at Y8

(0)
This is a full SOW that I use with Y8, but in the past I have used it with Y9 also. The SOW outline is uploaded here, with 3 pieces of musical theatre music, 4 pieces of film music and the two presentations on musical theatre and film music to be used for lessons 1 and 3 respectively. I have uploaded both Sibelius and PDF versions of all the pieces of music. The pieces of music are all arranged in C major, with the number of accidentals and the varying rhythms in the music giving an option of various difficulties for students to choose from. The presentations are in the form of Prezis but they have been downloaded in a format that can be opened without the software being downloaded. All that is needed is an internet connection as the presentation has YouTube clips embedded in it. I have used the presentations this term and the links were all still active and up to date. However if there is a problem when you come to open these two files please contact me and I will try to resolve it.

Peer/Teacher Assessment Feedback Sheets for the New AQA GCSE Music

The attachment contains two sheets, one for component 2 (performing) and one for component 3 (composing). The sheets aim to present the mark schemes in a way the students can access, whilst giving the option of a simplified form of marking for teachers. This can also be used for peer assessment of each others' compositions and performances. The marking format involves giving the students an effort grade of outstanding, good, disappointing or unacceptable, an overall mark based on the assessment criteria, a space for a WWW and EBI comment, and a space for the student to respond to the marks given and to give themselves a target.

AQA New GCSE Music - Understanding Music: AoS 2

(1)
These presentations form part of the SOW on area of study 2 (popular music). The first presentation is on Broadway music. This presentation has clips of musicals by decade, and allows the students to discuss the music and how it has changed and developed over this period. The next lessons then focus on performing musical theatre pieces to further develop the students' understanding. The second powerpoint uploaded focuses on Film and Gaming music. I used it over three weeks, 3 hours of lesson time a week. Slide 9 contains a note about the exercise which teachers may want to read first. The sheet for the homework mentioned on slide 14 is also attached. There are explanations and examples of different techniques used in film and gaming music also. The last powerpoint focuses on Rock Music of the 1960's and 1970's. A major part of this section focused on a class performance of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (one of the set pieces). For this I used the kaleidoscope version, which can be bought from most online music shops. I used Musicroom.com due to the educator's discount. I use class performance of music from the genre a lot, hence why some slides are more detailed than others.
