Mass Spectrometry Tutorial - with a focus on interpretation of spectra
This resource is intended for use by A-level / BTech Chemistry Teachers. It consists of a powerpoint presentation and accompanying problem solving activities which should take about 1 hour to deliver. Some of the content may be more advanced than required but can be deleted as you wish. I recommend you to add relevant images to the slides. These resources have been produced by a chemistry graduate who has experience working in a mass spectrometry laboratory and currently teaches BSc and HND chemistry at university.
Learning objectives
* To learn the components of a mass spectrometer and their basic function
* To understand how Electron and Chemical Ionisation occurs
* To be able to interpret a mass spectrum using:
- Molecular ion
- Isotope patterns
- Nitrogen rule
I recommend printing the slides for Task 1 (in colour, 6 per page), cutting them out and mixing up the order before handing them to the students in envelopes.
