Mass Spectrometry Tutorial - with a focus on interpretation of spectra

(0)
This resource is intended for use by A-level / BTech Chemistry Teachers. It consists of a powerpoint presentation and accompanying problem solving activities which should take about 1 hour to deliver. Some of the content may be more advanced than required but can be deleted as you wish. I recommend you to add relevant images to the slides. These resources have been produced by a chemistry graduate who has experience working in a mass spectrometry laboratory and currently teaches BSc and HND chemistry at university. Learning objectives * To learn the components of a mass spectrometer and their basic function * To understand how Electron and Chemical Ionisation occurs * To be able to interpret a mass spectrum using: - Molecular ion - Isotope patterns - Nitrogen rule I recommend printing the slides for Task 1 (in colour, 6 per page), cutting them out and mixing up the order before handing them to the students in envelopes.

Tutorial designed for A-level chemistry students. The powerpoint presentation covers NMR theory. Problem solving tasks include deducing the no. of different H or C environments in a molecule also matching the 1H and 13C spectra to the correct analytes (answers included). The presentation and activities will take about 2 hours to complete in class. Learning Objectives: * To understand why NMR is such an important tool for organic chemists * To understand how the technique works * To be able to interpret NMR spectra using: - Chemical shifts - Integration - Multiplicity (high resolution 1H NMR only)
