Photosynthesis

(0)
Four 60 minute lessons of content to guide pupils to understand the process of photosynthesis, how a leaf is adapted to carry out photosynthesis and the interaction of limiting factors including the application of the inverse square law. This is a guided set of lessons and therefore can be taught by non-specialists. Although closely following the Edexcel GCSE exam specification, these lessons are also appropriate for KS3 pupils in preparation for their GCSE Science content (both triple and combined scientists). The design of these lessons is based around the following specification points from the Edexcel Combined Science (Biology) course: B6.1 Describe photosynthetic organisms as the main producers of food and therefore biomass B6.2 Describe photosynthesis in plants and algae as an endothermic reaction that uses light energy to react carbon dioxide and water to produce glucose and oxygen B6.3 Explain the effect of temperature, light intensity and carbon dioxide concentration as limiting factors on the rate of photosynthesis B6.4 (Higher) Explain the interactions of temperature, light intensity and carbon dioxide concentration in limiting the rate of photosynthesis B6.6 (Higher) Explain how the rate of photosynthesis is directly proportional to light intensity and inversely proportional to the distance from a light source, including the use of the inverse square law calculation B6.9 …including the structure and function of the stomata

Edexcel (9-1) topic 1 (Key concepts in Biology) revision cards

(0)
This set of 19 topic 1 (key concepts in Biology) revision cards are designed to be A5 laminated with activities on the front and answers on the back. Pupils are encouraged to use dry wipe pens to complete the card, check their answers, erase their first attempt and try again as part of KS4 revision for the Edexcel Combined Science (Biology) specification. These allow pupils to work independently and self assess their understanding of individual specification points. Inclusion of specification points on the cards with a difficulty rating also allows pupils to target their revision to parts that they do not understand. Differentiation is included on each individual card as ‘core’ activities, ‘stretch’ activities and the more difficult ‘apply’ activities. Specification points are taken from the Edexcel Combined Science (Biology) specification although these cards are relevant to the content of other exam board specifications as well. ALSO INCLUDED - the original PowerPoint version of the activities so that they can be modified to the needs of your pupils and including the template slide so that you can make more of your own in the same style!

Plant transport lessons

Two lessons to guide pupils to understand the transport of different substances through plants including transpiration in the xylem and translocation in the phloem. These lessons are designed for teaching the Edexcel Combined Science GCSE content although they are also appropriate for higher level KS3 groups in preparation for their GCSE Science. The lessons are designed in such a way that they are highly structured and can be easily taught by non-specialists. These two lessons are based around the Edexcel Combined Science (Biology) specification and the specification points that are covered are listed below: B1.15 Explain how substances are transported into and out of cells, including by diffusion, osmosis and active transport B6.7 Explain how the structure of the root hair cells is adapted to absorb water and mineral ions B6.8 Explain how the structures of the xylem and phloem are adapted to their function in the plant, including: Lignified dead cells in xylem transporting water and minerals through the plant Living cells in phloem using energy to transport sucrose around the plant B6.9 Describe how water and mineral ions are transported through the plant by transpiration… B6.10 Describe how sucrose is transported around the plant by translocation
