Recipes in English ESOL or British Culture resource

(0)
This lesson PowerPoint focuses on British food culture (recipes in English). The lesson integrates reading stages with discussion, building content towards an end speaking task. It would suit a range of levels from around pre-intermediate and above (Entry 2+ to around level 1, A2+ to around B2). The learning outcomes are: Recognise some famous British chefs. Identify British foods already known. Read a famous British recipe and explain how to make it. Present a recipe of your choice to the class. Plan a dinner party menu. This lesson is ready to go - all elements are in the presentation. If being used face to face, you could print the reading slides for the learners as worksheets. You could change the dinner party planning task to a writing task if you wanted to integrate more writing (writing instead of discussing the menu).

Designed for City and Guilds ESOL skills for Life 4692 but relevant for a wider scope of learners, in this activity, learners first discuss unusual transportation methods from a picture stimulus and discuss superlative related questions (should be review at this level). Learners analyse an exam task, plan their answer and then look at a model answer. Learners process the text for meaning and extract advantages of e-scooters. Then generate disadvantages with their partner. There is language input with useful phrases drawn from the text, vertically extended, and they write their own examples. A vocabulary matching activity, punctuation noticing activity, a grammar task to use if to support and extend ideas. Learners write their own letter from the exam question previously planned. There is then a post-writing checklist, which can be used for peer feedback if desired.
