The Zig Zag Guide has excellent introductory activities but I have also used the excellent pre-reading lessons by Julie Barcelona published on TES. They were developed for use in class but could easily be used for independent study or revision. The lessons include a variety of activities designed to deepen the knowledge of the book in order to succeed in essay writing. This guide includes activities devised to revise key language to improve translation accuracy from the target language to English (section A) and English to the target langage (section B). It also includes tips on the tricky aspects of translation, such as translating infinitives and -ing forms of verbs, the passive voice, phrases which cannot be translated literally, or tricky phases such as ‘acabo de’, ‘al llegar’, etc… It includes a worksheet and an answer sheet.

They can be used as flashcards (cutting each row, and folding them into three) or turned into a game, where students challlenge each other to understand questions, answer them in the target language or come up with a question that matches the answer. All particpants in the game will benefit from playing, as it practices pronuncaition, understanding questions, listening comprehension, asking questions and makes students aware of the success criteria for answering questions in a role play and photocard situation. A PowerPoint introducing the French mardi-gras tradition. There is a flipped learning activity based on a You Tube video by Mr Innes, to prepare students to basic vocabulary.
