The Gravity Workshop is a self-contained Keystage 4 and 5 workshop where students can use an interactive simulator to investigate how gravity changes depending on where you are in the Solar System. During the workshop, students can make measurements using a simple stopwatch, and use their results to calculate the surface gravity of each planet. The workshop combines ICT, Physics and Maths into a fun hour of discovery.

The Galaxy Classification Workshop is a self-contained Keystage 4 and 5 workshop where students will use images from the Liverpool Telescope and classify the galaxies they see in them. The main focus of the activity is for students to consider the quality of the classification scheme that is used (the Hubble Classification Scheme) and consider how it might be improved.

Seeing Workshop

The Seeing Workshop is a self-contained Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 workshop. Students will be introduced to the concept of astronomical seeing and how it affects the quality of astronomical images. The causes of seeing are discussed and students are presented with a selection of images taken under different conditions and are asked to chose which images have been taken under the best seeing conditions. This leads to discussion on how best to identify the effects of seeing in an image and how scientists take seeing into account.

The Lunar Craters workshop is a Keystage 3/4 activity to investigate the distribution of craters on the Moon’s surface. After assembling a mosaic of a quarter-phase Moon, students will be asked to select a number of regions to analyse in more depth, by estimating the number and size of craters visible within them. The estimates for the different regions will then be compared and an assessment made about the degree of cratering across the lunar surface.

The 'Hunting for Asteroids' activity is a self-contained Keystage 2, 3 and 4 workshop where students learn about what asteroids are and can then look for asteroids themselves within images taken by the Liverpool Telescope. Using the same techniques employed by professional astronomers, students will quickly learn how to detect real asteroids in real observations, and learn how to calculate the speed of those asteroids. The workshop combines ICT, Physics and Maths into a fun hour of discovery.

The '3-Colour Imaging' workshop is a self-contained workshop that introduces students to the idea of creating 3-colour images using the Liverpool Telescope, and can be adapted to suit all secondary ages and abilities. Using the same techniques employed by professional astro-photographers, students will quickly learn how to use LTImage to combine images taken through different filters, in order to generate a representative colour image of the object being observed. The workshop brings together ICT, Physics and a little Art to make a colourful hour of discovery.

Moon Jigsaw

This is a Keystage 2/3 project to put together mosaics of the Moon using photographs taken by the Liverpool Telescope. Each 'moonsaic' contains a series of pictures of the moon which can be printed out for closer observation by students. They can then work in teams or as a class to put these pictures together to build up a larger image of the moon as a whole.
