This is a 24-page booklet which you can print double-sided in A5. It will give your students a great recap on how to form all of the main verb tenses, including negative formation in French. I have laid it out in grid format so that each page is easy to follow and methodical, helping students to see the patterns when they are getting to grips with conjugating. I have included the same verbs throughout the booklet, so they can learn from the repetition needed when starting with the infinitive, taking off the ending to get the stem, and adding the correct ending depending on which tense they want to use. There is also a useful page which helps them to describe weather and events using the Imperfect Tense. The answers are all in the back, and the back cover (if you print it as a two-sided booklet) is a page of contents which they can use to assess their confidence with each tense. This is for A Level learners who are beginning to write essays. It gives some good sentence starters for introduction, middle and conclusion of essays. I have geared some of the sentences to Bonjour Tristesse, but you can always change those to help them write for another novel.

This is an authentic text worksheet which helps students to work with more challenging French in the style of the new GCSE, exposing them to vocabulary that they may not have met before. They need to find particular words/phrases in the texts, and answer some comprehension questions by scanning through the text. Ultimately, the students are responding to the material by comparing the two homes which are being described. It links to the cultural importance of a key French literary text about a mining community in northern France which revolts against its poverty by striking in the 1860s.

This could be an ideal starter, plenary or revision activity on the Healthy Lifestyle topic for GCSE. I would recommend printing it off in A3 size, and then giving out one copy to each pair of students so they can write directly on the sheet. The activity has elements of Blooms Taxonomy in it, working on the premise that the students develop more in-depth skills with the language as they become more confident with it. The idea of ‘count to 10’ is that the students decide which activities they want to do, all related to the first activity (worth 3 points) which is a gapfill. Once they have done the gapfill and earned themselves 3 points (which they write in the empty arrow), then they can choose any of the other activities they want to do. The less challenging activities are worth fewer points than the more challenging ones. The aim is for the pairs of students to try to accrue 10 points in the time you have set them.

I have struggled with getting Y8s to separate the way they think about forming Perfect Tense with Avoir and with Etre. These two PPT slides can be printed off and stuck into their books so they can use them when they are writing the Perfect Tense. I demonstrated with real blocks that, as building blocks have to be built from the ground upwards (gravity dictates!), so is the same with these guidance sheets. I hope you find them useful - please let me know if it works for your pupils! Mine have to be reminded to use them each time they are writing...
