English Language Paper 1 Revision Packs (for new AQA exam)

(32)
Revision packs using various extracts to revise all questions for the Paper 1 Language exam. These work really well as homework, revision or in-class work. Each pack includes an extract and according questions with further scaffolding questions (which could be removed to challenge high ability students.) Extracts used are taken from The Lovely Bones, The Kite Runner and Lord of the Flies. The Lord of the Flies pack also includes a 'completed' pack (by me!) - with answers completed to grade 3 level, and the task for students is to improve and extend the answers to achieve grade 5 level. A PDF file of my (handwritten) completed answers is also attached. I've found these packs work really well in improving students' approaches to and progress in the reading questions.

A Christmas Carol revision booklet

(56)
A substantial booklet to help students: - Remember the events and key quotes of A Christmas Carol - Develop your analysis of and response to the novel-meaning your ability to explain what quotes suggest about characters, why a character/place/event is important in the story etc. - Consider context-Victorian life in 1843, and Dickens’ inspirations and intentions in writing the novel. Each page has a quotation then progressively more difficult questions. The booklet covers Stave 1 - the middle on Stave 4. Another booklet will follow over summer covering the rest of the text.

A scheme of learning to suit lower KS3. The lessons cover reading the text and analysing: plot, character, relationship, themes, style/narrative, structure. The following lessons building up to an assessment based on language analysis. Assessment resources use the old APP style levels but could easily be changed to suit new GCSE AOs. It's an incredible book and the scheme takes students through the book and to an appreciation of the text.

An Inspector Calls: All characters, context and Priestley's views

PPTs and all resources for 21 lessons introducing the play, looking briefly at the Inspector then focusing on Arthur, Sheila and Gerald, Mrs Birling, Eric, Priestley's message, the play's denouement and the context of the play. Instructions and timings are in the notes section at the bottom of the first slide. I have left annotations on the slides just to show how lessons went with my class. Quite vocabulary heavy in terms of activities - this is a particular need for our students to develop. Lessons are focused on plot/character knowledge, vocabulary development and response to the text. Lessons originally designed for middle-ability Year 10, and led to very pleasing exam results!

Descriptive / Creative writing using I am Legend (film and book)

(0)
A scheme of work for high-ability KS3 using clips from the beginning of 'I am Legend' as a stimuli to create atmospheric writing about New York after a devastating, ruinous evacuation. Also using extract from The Great Gatsby to demonstrate the use of simile and animal imagery. Lessons build up to writing an extended descriptive piece 'New York now.' Assessment resources still use the old APP levels language, but this could be easily changed over to match new GCSE AOs. A copy of the film DVD / access to you tube is needed. This scheme is engaging, challenging and every time has helped to produce high quality and well-considered writing.
