This Case Study is a detailed contemporary analysis of low income settlements and is for students of A level geography following the following specifications: OCR, AQA, I.B. (dip) and C.I.E. It would even be appropriate for the new 9-1 GCSE spec for your high achievers predicted 8/9 as a flipped learning task or to supplement classwork. It serves as a further reading or 'stretch and challenge' task. It can be used as a stand alone case study when answering examination questions or as a springboard for further research into urban poverty and deprivation in the developing world. Teachers can also set questions for extension work in class or homework using the material in the study. This case study fits into both the Geography A Level Curriculum and the Development Studies A level Curriculum and looks at how micro-finance can be used to improve the lives of the urban poor whilst giving communities the opportunity to develop confidence and community leadership skills. You can also use it in gender studies to show how the empowerment of women leads to measurable improvements in the quality of life for all.

This is a short case study based on a visit made by the author in 2014 to a self help group working out of Colombo. It focusses on the notion of empowering women in communities in order to advance personal development and help to brdge the substantial gender gap which exists in Sri Lanka today. Development Studies and Geography students will find this useful as an example of the kind of initiatives gaining traction in South Asia but it may also be interesting as a cross curricular theme.
