The Handmaid's Tale Graphic Novel Full SOW
This comprehensive, fully-resourced scheme of work guides students through the stunning graphic novel adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, developing both close reading skills and visual literacy alongside the literary analysis expected at GCSE and A Level.
What’s included:
109 slides of fully sequenced, lesson-ready PowerPoint content
All accompanying worksheets (including “What’s in a Name?”, context research tasks, comparative analysis activities, and the Historical Notes task)
Extra analysis practice tasks throughout, including paragraph-writing, essay practice, and extended comparison tasks
A structured BOW (Broadening of World) activity featuring The Lives of Others
What the scheme covers:
The unit opens by building a solid grounding in dystopian fiction — its conventions, key texts, and real-world inspirations — before diving into the graphic novel itself. From there, lessons explore:
Graphic novel terminology and visual analysis skills (panels, gutters, graphic weight, framing, figures)
Colour symbolism — the iconic use of red, blue, green, and yellow across the adaptation
Intertextuality, including biblical references and the graphic novel as an adaptation
The world of Gilead — its social hierarchy, origins, and ideological justifications
Key themes: indoctrination, surveillance, justice and punishment, resistance, religion, sexuality and sexual violence, relationships and intimacy
Life pre-Gilead — flashbacks, foreshadowing, and comparative analysis
Narrative perspective and reliability, including Offred’s relationship with the reader
The Historical Notes — contextualising the text’s framing device
Throughout the scheme, students are regularly asked to write analytically, comparing the original novel with the graphic novel adaptation, and responding to both visual and written texts. Tasks scaffold from guided close analysis of individual panels to independent extended writing.
Ideal for: KS4–KS5 English Literature / A Level Language & Literature/IB Language A
