I have compiled ‘Fact files’ in French on 6 Francophone players (1 from each Francophone country in the World Cup.) I have also written a huge quiz based on these fact files, plus a list of the teams and the timetable of the knock out rounds. The documents should be copied and given out to students in groups of 3/4 and they can use the information to answer the questions. Most questions are in English, with 8 in French at the end. 80 marks in total! Should keep students quiet for an hour Students could then create their own fact file on players of their choice similar to these. All information is authentic - from yahoo.fr / French Wikipedia / L’Equipe online. All documents are in Word so can be edited. Answers included. Suitable for KS3 / KS4 French Please provide feedback. This is a worksheet which examines in detail the two key scenes of the film - the conseil de classe and the “petasse” scene where Souleymane eventually lashes out, tutoies M. Marin and storms out of the room. It consists of: a list of French vocabulary which should be looked up as part of a ‘pre-reading’ activity, a list of questions in French about the scene, enabling the students to describe what is happening (and then why it is so important.) a list of quotes which the students need to identify - who says them and to / about what / whom. answers to the above. It is ideal for homework or to be done in class.

Detailed analysis of 6 key scenes in which multiculturalism plays a role, along with tensions and difficulties caused by a multicultural class. This is a 19 slide PPT, giving background about the area, and then exploring these 6 scenes - including the time the scene appears to make finding it easy. Each scene has detailed analysis in French and a task for the students - anagrams . re-arrange the lines, fill in the missing words, questions in French. I have found this PPT really helps the students with their PEEL (Point / Explanation / Evidence / Link to the title) as the scenes and analysis are so specific.

This is a reading activity about Les repas aimed at Year 7 French. There are two texts and a list of 10 questions. Students have to colour each question a different colour and then colour the answers in each text in a corresponding colour. There are two versions of the sheet - the second has more vocabulary to help weaker students This has been tried and tested by me and my colleagues - year 7s seem to do it well. This is a detailed 23 page powerpoint which introduces the perfect tense / passé composé in a step-by-step way - showing the difference between avoir and être verbs. It uses verbs and phrases connected with the topic of holidays. Slides include revision of the parts of avoir / être, a list of verbs in the passé composé which the students have to divide into the two groups, a game where they have to guess the ‘backwards’ verbs as they appear letter-by-letter backwards, and an unjumbling exercise where the students have to put the wods in the right order, and then identify the verbs and whether they take avoir / être. Finally they have to practise manipulating the verbs with different subject pronouns. I have always used this successfully with medium-high ability Year 8s, but it would also work well for weker KS4 students. It always takes me about 90 minutes with classes; certainly at least an hour if the class is really focused. Please provide feedback. Hope it’s useful!

To be used by students for a speaking activity - each picture represents a different answer to the questions above. This is a series of lessons (4-6 hours) about ‘Vacances’ and the perfect tense - I’ve used with Year 8 but could do Year 9 too and elements could be used for KS4 too as a starting point / for revision. The resources are: Short Q / A conversation to be used for speaking practice - each slide has more gaps and fewer words. A longer version of the previous conversation, this time with model answers - MWB activity / gap-fill of verbs / instructions for a ‘Consequences’ type game. A copy of the questions from resource 2 in Word format for students. A vocabulary memory game, followed by a paragraph in the past tense describing a holiday in the past tense - revising and adding to the vocab / structures above. This also becomes gapped so the students have to remember / work out key details of the paragraph. Past tense sentences like the ones above in wingdings so students have to crack the code. Answers included. NB - underneath the title is the same phrase in wingdings as the clue - not all letters are used so they have to work out verbs etc using prior knowledge. Also, note - 2 crosses (one is slightly 3D) and 2 flags (one has a pointy end.) And any sybols are not coded, otherwise it gets very confused. Words in pictures - students look up a series of pictures, find the first letter in French and spell a word. (Eg Pomme / Lunettes / Arc en ciel / Glace / Espagne - spells Plage.) All answers connected with holidays, although pictures not. I have used all these on many occasions with Year 8 clases of all abilities and have found them to be motivating and effective for helping students to learn and manipulate the perfect tense and Holiday’related vocabulary. The Powerpoints all have instructions for use on the slides.

This is a useful sheet talking Year 7s through reguar -er verbs and helping them to spot the patterns with verb endings. It also helps them to learn the meanings of the subject pronouns. Pupils have to follow step by step instructions, and they colour the subject pronouns / stem / endings in different colours - thus showing them the difference between them all. It has worked very well with my Year 7 students for several years and those of my colleagues. It certainly helps the students to unpick the -er verbs and understand how they work. This Power point has 4 activities on it: a) Match the starts and ends of words to practise vocabulary related to holidays. (answers included) b) Work out the past tense sentences about holidays from the number of letters in each word of the phrase. (This requires students to be very familiar with Je suis allé / Je suis parti etc.) c) Using mini white boards, pupils provide the verb for various sentence endings. d) Using mini white boards, pupils have the verbs and provide the endings (similar verbs as above.) I have used this many times and it works well. There is enough material here for at least one hour, or the activities work well as 4 separate starters for different, consecutive lessons. Any feedback most welcome!

I have taken a selection of common speaking / writing questions on a variety of topics and put them, one by one, on a Power point. The added twist is that the slides are timed, so the students have to say as much as they can before the slide changes. It starts off slow and gets faster so students have to say more. Each slide has A or B at the top - for person A or B in each pair. It’s designed for students to say the answers aloud to each other, but they may equally write answers using mini white boards. Good for revision at KS4. Please give feedback. I hope you find this useful; my classes have always found it quite motivating.

This is a simple but effective speaking activity on Food & Drink for Year 7, practising il y a / il n’y a pas de, and including an information gap. Split students into pair and give one person in each pair Personne A, the other Personne B. Person A has to guess what is in their partner’s fridge: Il y a du lait? Oui il y a du lait / Non, il n’y a pas de lait Person A write down the items which person B does have in the gaps on their sheet. You could turn it into a competition so the students take it in turns to ask questions and have to be first to fill the fridge gaps in. This has always worked with Year 7 groups in the past.
