Science themed Escape Room

(6)
I put this together for British Science week 2021 which as a department we are celebrating virtually a week early. There are 10 challenges for pupils to work through, most differentiated into an easier ‘Purple’ route or a harder ‘Black’ route. If undertaking the black route pupils can cover the left side of their screen so as not to be tempted to look at the easier route. Challenges were written with year 8 in mind but could be adapted for older year groups too.

Differentiated science extension tasks in a poster format for display

An extension task poster, differentiated into bronze, silver and gold tasks of increasing challenge. Tasks are varied and my pupils have enjoyed doing them. I use it when pupils have finished, they get the habit of going and picking a task which they can then work on, leave and finished later if necessary. Particularly useful for KS3 where you may not necessarily wish to provide ‘more work’ as extension.

British Science Week Poster Competition- alternative theme

We decided the official poster theme for this year’s British Science Week was not appropriate for our pupils. (I did email the British science association pointing out 30% of pupils in the UK live in poverty and 1/5 suffer domestic abuse so reflecting on positive childhoods might cause trauma but their response was it was approved by EX teachers, among other things.) I have therefore designed my own based on the overall theme of curiosity and thought I would share in case others feel the same too. Very disappointing really after emailing them last year over how all the senior winners were from private/grammar schools and them saying they would reflect more on how to be inclusive for us state sector schools with no IT resources etc. Anyway, hope this helps!
