Several example non-fiction texts to help students prepare for questions 5 and 6. A worksheet that guides students on how to make their writing more “sophisticated”. Copyright: All references to the AQA exam in the PowerPoint are to the generic questions that come up on the exam, plus the sample answers quote the sources that accompany section A. This 16 page booklet contains revision activities for the English Language Paper 1 GCSE exam (AQA new specification). The source material is an extract from the opening of Sons and Lovers by DH Lawrence (available via search engine). Section A - Reading Questions 1-4 include sample answers aimed at level 3 and level 4 on the mark scheme to demonstrate to students what a higher level answer looks like. There are also follow up tasks students can complete (write a PEE/PEA paragraph). Section B - Writing Question 5: Descriptive Writing. (Image of a fun fair taken from Google images) There is a brief overview on how to structure a piece of descriptive writing followed by a model response (1 paragraph) Students can then use the success criteria included (adapted from the mark scheme) to peer assess another sample paragraph and then write their own description. Question 5: Narrative. There is a planning table that uses the short story structure that students can use to help plan their narrative responses. Additionally, there is a sample table that has been completed to demonstrate how to do this. A sample narrative is included that can be used as a model or peer assessed. Students can then write their own narrative pieces and peer assess each other’s work.
