Ros Wilson Big Write Class Assessment Grid

(6)
An Excel grid that uses the Ros Wilson Big Writing Assessment standards (updated for 2016 expectations) to assess pupil performance against the new Age Related Expectation criteria. Instructions for use are on the notes page and I hope they are completely self explanatory. If not I have failed, not for the first time! Hope they save people a bit of time. Just to answer a couple of questions. I have not done a similar spreadsheet for Big Read. The E, D and S grades do mean Emerging, Developing and Secure. I believe the rough %age for E is up to 33% and D up to 66%. There are some (grey) criteria that are non-negotiable standards and these do not count towards the %age grading.

Year 6 Arithmetic Test generator - 2015 exemplar

(1)
This file produces a never ending supply of Arithmetic Tests (with mark schemes) based very closely on the 2015 exemplar test posted by the DfE. To produce a new test and mark scheme go on to the Instruction page (tab 2) and hit recalculate. In order to save the tests so they cannot be changed I print them as PDFs using the cute PDF software available free on the internet. In this way I fix the test and mark scheme together. I have also included two pages of extension challenges for more able mathematicians. These do not need to be printed with the test if you do not need them. To see an example of the type of test produced please visit the free section of my web page where I have posted an example paper as a PDF file. I would welcome your comments if you have the time to review this resource.

Set of 6 arithmetic tests supplied with mark schemes to prepare Year 6 pupils for their SAT arithmetic tests. Each test includes 6 additional extension questions to challenge more able pupils. If you want to produce more tests like this please download my Arithmetic Test Generator, which provides a never ending supply of tests. I would welcome your comments if you have the time to review this resource.

Formal Arithmetic Calculation Challenges

(0)
A set of differentiated calculation challenges: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. The calculations are formally set out and can be changed at the touch of a button. The answers, showing correct method of calculation, are available on a separate tab so pupils can mark their own work. This is a never ending resource, which provides differentiated challenges for Year 5 and 6 pupils. An excellent resource to teach your pupils the formal layout expected for SAT tests with the added appeal of no marking. An example of the multiplication challenge answer page is shown as an example.

Year 6 Arithmetic Test Revision - for use on Interactive Whiteboard - no marking required

The Weekly Challenge file produces a range of differentiated arithmetic challenges covering everything that could come up in the Year 6 Arithmetic SAT. The answers are also provided at the touch of a button so your pupils can mark their own work. The tasks are differentiated at 4 levels working from left to right on the screen. The columns to the right (purple, black) go beyond the Year 6 expectations to accommodate very able mathematicians. Answers to fraction questions are given in their simplest form. I have left Friday blank as I use this to test progress using my Arithmetic Test generator, which is also available on my TES resources page. If the children score =30 they are expected to start on the pink challenges working down through all 10 and they are then allowed to progress across the sheet doing any purple and black challenges they want to do. I give my pupils maths books with 7mm squares to work in as the arithmetic test paper will use 7mm squares and they get 20 minutes every morning. This allows 10 minutes for pre-learning with the class teacher or a learning partner followed by 10 minutes for the activities. There is also a score sheet. They record with a tick the questions they have got correct and put a score out of 10 in the final column. Some like to put 2 ticks if they got a pink question right and 3 ticks for purple etc. This is fine but they should only score 1 for each correct answer to stop them concentrating on hard questions they can do well. If they do not try all the questions they will have gaps in their knowledge when they sit the test. If you use this resource I would appreciate some reviews. I have been using this for 6 weeks with my Year 6 class and have seen their average score increase from 24 to 31 in their arithmetic paper test results. Hope you have the same success.

COUNTDOWN Mental Arithmetic Game

(0)
Based on the TV show Countdown this is a nice mental arithmetic game that develops quick mental calculation skills. The rules are simple. You can use each of the numbers at the top of the page only once but can use any operation you know (multiply, divide, add, subtract, square, square root etc.) as many times as you want. There are two target numbers set for the players to reach, one easy and one hard. The hyperlink at the bottom of the page is to link to a piece of suitably long music. I found the actual Countdown music by searching the Internet.

HISABATI ROLE PLAY GAME

(1)
I have developed a game based on familiar role play games to improve children's maths skills. The game is aimed at Year 5-8 children and incorporates a lot of mental arithmetic as well as coordinates, angle estimation and area and perimeter calculations all set in a game play context. I have put up the basic rule book alongside some example adventures and other resources needed to start playing the game. If you want more resources please visit my school website (Hooe Primary Academy). If you follow the children/class pages/Mr Daykin links you should find what you need. I am hoping to host some of the additional adventures and other materials developed by my school club over the coming weeks so please revisit regularly.

Mental Arithmetic Starter

(0)
A mental arithmetic starter that can be adapted week by week to revise a number of basic mental arithmetic skills. I have included freeware music on some pages. I generally put music on all pages and edit it to run for about 1 minute following a course on the rock and roll classroom. My Year 6 like the music but I am not sure it improves their concentration!

SPELLING GRID GAME

(0)
Excel worksheet that produces a 9 letter grid to play spelling/word making games on an interactive whiteboard. I use this as an assembly starter activity for junior assemblies but it could just as easily be used as a lesson starter or end of day game. Just click on the change button to produce a new grid to play with. Favourite games with my pupils are longest word, unique word, most 3/4/5 letter words etc. Rules are simple - you can use each letter only once and you must use the middle letter in your word. You can make your own rules of course! I use a minute sandtimer as I can’t work out how to make a countdown timer in Excel.
