This is an excellent shared reading unit linked to the Vikings History topic. The unit lasts 6 weeks and consists of 6 fictional diaries all from generations of the same family, enabling pupils to deepen their understanding of Viking culture as well as practise their comprehension skills (VIPERS). Each week consists of 4 sessions: background & vocabulary; retrieval & inference; teacher led input o assist with explanation questions; explanation & sequencing / summarising. The unit comes as a ppt with accompanying word documents. The 6 diaries explore: Diary 1: understanding Viking life in Scandinavia, Diary 2: the first raids, Diary 3: invasion and conquest, Diary 4: settlement and community, Diary 5: trade and cultural exchange, Diary 6: exploration and legacy.
