Rec/Y1 Halloween Maths: Missing Numbers to 20 Plus RPS Activities

(0)
9 Halloween maths slides for Rec/Year 1 to practise missing numbers to 20, with hidden number grids, reasoning questions and problem-solving puzzles. Wanda Witch, Gus Ghost, Bella Bat and Zac Zombie are on hand to make October maths a bit more fun for your Rec/Y1 class (and a bit more thoughtful). Why use it? Missing number tasks are a KS1 staple, but they can easily turn into “fill in the gap, tick, next!” This pack covers the same important skill (knowing what comes before, after and between numbers to 20) but gets children talking about it. The characters keep making claims, and it’s the children’s job to decide who’s right and prove it. What’s inside? 9 slides in three types: Hidden number grids (3): characters cover some of the numbers on a 1 to 20 grid and children write them in the table. They get trickier each time, with 5, then 7, then 8 hidden numbers. Is Wanda right?" reasoning (3): a character says something (sometimes wrong!) and children explain why, including one that uses “one more than” and “one less than”. Problem-solving puzzles (3): clue-based challenges using “one more than” and “between”, plus a covered-pumpkin puzzle with more than one answer. When could you use it? Halloween week, or throughout October and the autumn term As a starter or a main task on the board Morning work or early finishers Small group or intervention work Show it on the board or print it, whichever suits your class. Skills covered: number order to 20, one more and one less, between, counting on and back, explaining your reasoning. An answer key is included, with common misconceptions to listen out for.

Early Years/Foundation Stage Doubling story powerpoint

This is a lovely number story called The Two of Everything by Lily Toy Hong. I have created a ppt version of the story. It tells the tale of Mr and Mrs Haktak who find a magical pot in which everything they put in is doubled! It is a great introduction to doubling especially in Early Years or Year 1. Ask the children to work out how many objects will come out of the pot as you read through the story. They will pick up the idea quickly! If you can, have a simple bag/sack that could be used alongside and ask the children to help you to work out what double would be if the sack was magic like the pot in the story!
