HSW Practical investigation planning sheet and procedure

(0)
I use this PowerPoint presentation over the years when students had to complete science coursework but I find it is still useful for the practical skills assessed in the new 2016 science curriculum. It allows my students to access skills that may otherwise be forgotten in the core practical as coursework is no longer part of assessment. My students love planning their own experiments, carrying out the investigation and collecting their own data. They discuss the conclusion and evaluation questions before writing individual answers. I always print and copy A3 size HSW planning sheet slide (differentiated into many styles over the years, I have included only 2 ) and students work as a team to complete planning sheets and as they gain confidence in the process they complete them individually. My students find the sheets more 'fun' and less intimidating than using lined paper. I use it for all year groups (KS3 love using them in particular). The other skills, drawing tables and graphs can then be completed in groups or individually. I have included the footprints website link - great for showing animation of drawing graphs, and the conclusion and evaluation questions I have adapted from the old SCA Edexcel planning investigation booklets. The PowerPoint includes a marks scheme for each section which some teachers found useful. I sometimes give the students the marks scheme before the task so they understand what is expected of them. The marks scheme is also useful for self assessment or peer assessment. The whole process usually takes about 3 hours but often the graph work and evaluation can be completed for homework.
