A set of lessons (2-3 weeks) on poetry leading the children to write their own Titanic themed poem inspired by James Reeves ‘Slowly’. This overview and set of resources was made by me, it is based on Bob Cox’s quality writing ideas & section on James Reeves. The slow picture to do a slow reveal with and ask ch to annotate (lesson 1-2) is in this book. A link is available below:

Some of the poems and ideas presented are quite tricky for the children, this is about spending quality lengths of time on understanding and exploring which will lead to the children producing quality poems. The children in my class produced amazing poems well beyond their ability!

In one lesson the ch watch clips of ‘Titanic’ and ‘A night to remember’ DVDs, annotating pictures on what is happening quickly or slowly. Parents permission must be sought.

Set of lessons that build to a final piece. Can be done in one full day or over a week. I did this with my (able) class of year 3/4s as part of World book day/reading week. It assumes ch know the following list of literary techniques…
alliteration
personification
similes/metaphors
repeated verbs/adverbs
assonance (rhyme)
preposition
ellipsis
Onomatopoeia
So could be done as a full day/week filler/piece of assessment, towards the end of term so ch can show their knowledge independently.
Ch explore the book through engaging activities and then write their own version from a different perspective challenged to only use 20 words on each picture in the zig zag book or, write an in depth description of 3 acrobats.
Radial questioning is a good technique to encourage ch. to thinking more deeply. It also encourages ch to be curious and makes them more motivated to read/find the answers from the text.
I ask ch to answer any 2 questions well. Can we supported for ch with additional needs. Share ideas and children’s reasoning. Often they come up with better ideas any adult could think of! I often don’t give the ch the ‘correct answer’ but praise interesting ideas and detail explanations. This activity is about building their confidence and interest.
These sets of radial questions are linked to the Titanic topic. One is for a history lesson with photographs of items pulled from the wreckage. This could be used to asses the children’s understanding near the end of the unit.
The other two resources are from the text Samson’s Titanic Journey. I used them before the children had heard the story or even seen the front cover. It captivated their imagination and they really couldn’t wait to read it.
Titanic Experience Day
An opportunity for children to dress up and sail on the queen of the ocean.
I organised this for my year 3/4 class when they had a good knowledge of the Titanic but still had some misconceptions/myths clouding their knowledge Eg all the women and/or first class survived (about 5 weeks in). Could be done as an end of unit or instead of a trip if it’s too far to travel to Southampton.
It is a fun day which provides children with context and gives teachers good writing opportunities. The children LOVED it and were still talking about it with enthusiasm months later to an OFSTED inspector…

Parent letter template and itinerary/plan for a stone age day. Simple but a fun, practical day, ch loved it! We actually only did the morning and then made the mini villages the next day, so if you are limited for time it will still work. I dressed up and decorated the room with pictures of stone age animals and pieces of fake fur. Ch had bare feet, we pushed the tables away and sat on a fur blanket. I stapled brown paper onto the walls and doors at child height for their cave painting. You could make this even better by inviting an archery company in, hiring a history box with artifacts or lighting a real fire etc (H&S).
