This resource is mainly for Year 9s to 11s. It can be also be used for a middle and top set year 8s as well. The learning objective is to help students to understand that our modern day English is made up of different languages and that it is constantly involving. It should help students see that if they learn other languages, it can actually contribute to how articulate they are in English as they will have some interesting expressions and words at their fingertips to use in different situations! There are curricula links to English, history, music, art, politics and business. Teachers can examine how history has impacted upon the English language. It is best if student do the activity in pairs or in small teams of a max of 4 to create competition! Teachers can use their own example and perhaps students can think of some as well. There is the answer sheet for the teacher. The quiz has a total of 44 marks. See the following link for more words: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_English_words_by_country_or_language_of_origin

Hair styles in French and the verb Avoir

This ressource for a year 8/9 class teaches the 1st, 2nd and 3rd person singular of the verb ‘avoir’ as well as hairstyles (length, colour and style) in a fun way with reference to celebrities. By the end of the lesson students should be able to describe different hairstyles. They can either describe the hairstyle of a celebrity or someone else in the class. If they describe someone else in the class, the students could write their descriptions on a piece of paper with the name of the student being described that the teacher can take in and put into a bag/hat. The students then have to guess who it is, when the teacher reads the descriptions out. There is also a revision slide on eye colour if teachers want to use this for the next lesson or combine with the current lesson.

A French songwriter : Francis Cabrel

Francis Cabrel is one of France’s most popular songwriters. The LO is to inspire a love of French music and to learn some vocab and grammar depending upon the level of your students. Cabrel has sung about social issues such as *La Corrida *(bullfighting) and his songs have been performed by numerous musicians. One of the powerpoints is about bull-fighting and the second one about love and or relationships. I did the bull-fighting one with a year 8 Spanish class and we had a debate ‘for and against bull-fighting.’ The video is tastefully done and you can hear the ‘Gypsy Kings’ at the end. I include a gap-filling listening exercise. The second powerpoint is about a song by Francis C called *Je t’aime, je t’aimais et je t’aimerai *( I loved you, I love you and I will love you). It would be great for a French class from years 9 -12 and can be adapted. Here is a link to a French artist who has made beautiful video and ‘reprise’ from the original song depicting the relationship between a father (possibly single dad) and a daughter. Seemingly, in the video, the only thing keeping the father going is thoughts of his daughter and the love he has for her:. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgL76dFKVEE The song has been sung in different languages including in Arabic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4kyoWYEgpk Please do listen to other songs by Francis Cabrel eg Petite Marie. A good link for translation of the lyrics in English is: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/je-t039aimais-je-t039aime-je-t039aimerai-i-loved-i-love-and-ill-love-you.html
