KS3 Drama Cover Lesson – Morality Plays & Slapstick Genre Introduction | Reading + Creative Task
These ready-to-use cover lesson introduces students to the dramatic genre of Morality Plays and Comedy Slapstick while developing reading comprehension, drama knowledge and creative thinking.
The resources have been designed and used by students with English as an additional language (EAL). Students begin by learning the key concept of genre in drama then guides students through a series of structured tasks designed to check understanding and apply knowledge creatively.
The lesson is suitable for KS3 (most likely Y7 or Y8) drama lessons, non-specialist cover teachers, or independent learning tasks.
The booklet includes:
• A clear explanation of drama and genre
• Introduction to Morality Plays/Slapstick and their historical context
• Key vocabulary with multilingual translation support (Arabic, Urdu and Slovak)
• Multiple choice and true/false comprehension questions
• Extended written questions to deepen understanding
• A creative task where students design their own morality play / slapstick
Both booklets have potential for a practical task to follow if the teacher requires it or can be used as a writing task if practical work cannot be carried out.
This resource is particularly helpful for classes with EAL learners, as key vocabulary is scaffolded and tasks progress from simple comprehension to creative application.
The booklet can be completed independently as a cover lesson, or used as part of a KS3 drama unit on genre or theatre history.
