KS3 Plate tectonics and hazards booklet

(1)
This 15-lesson unit has been used successfully with Year 8 but could easily be used with a Year 7 or Year 9 group. It explores the tectonics and hazards and is a great topic for gaining conceptual knowledge ahead of GCSE with any of the exam boards. Students found this unit to be fun and interesting and the resource allows a great deal of flexibility in how aspects are taught and a structured way of representing the information. This resource is particularly suitable to SEN learners or for students who need to complete independent work. Alternatively, the booklet is a great resource to use for cover lessons. Our school uses ‘Challenge’, ‘Big Challenge’, and ‘Super Challenge’ to identify different levels of challenge and these are represented as : C, BC and SC in the booklet. Downloading the ‘Geography lessons and tasks overview’ spreadsheet will enable you to change the overview images should you require to do so (or simply delete them). As a department, we moved to directly completing work in booklets which I created as Head of Department instead of exercise books. This approach was a result of student voice and a change in departmental direction. We have found the booklet approach to be highly beneficial for a wide range of reasons, for example; student outcomes, ease of marking, engagement in tasks from the beginning of the lesson, easily setting starting points, AfL etc. The booklets have been very well-received by students and acknowledged as excellent practice by SLT and during an Ofsted inspection in 2018. The creation of each booklet took me a lot of time, as did the overview spreadsheet and both can be easily changed to meet the needs of your school / department. All other booklets I have created have a similar structure and wide range of tasks and very reasonably priced. The GCSE ones and some tasks in the KS3 booklets go well with the Pocket Posters Revision Guides and we bought every GCSE student one of these as well as class sets to enable them to develop independent learning habits. They are very cheap and found at: https://www.daydreameducation.co.uk/products/revision-guides-pocket-posters?subject=42

GCSE AQA Paper 1 Revision: Physical

(0)
This is a revision lesson I’ve created to revise the 3 topics: The Challenge of Natural Hazards, The Living World and Physical Landscapes of the UK. It is tailored towards the sub-topics that we have selected as a school, which are ‘Tropical Rainforests’ and ‘Hot Deserts’ in the Living World topic and ‘Coasts’ and ‘Rivers’ in the Physical Landscapes of the UK topic. The lesson is designed to be delivered in 1 hour, with a starter which recaps a little from each topic, and then 3 packs of tasks which are split up on different tables. Students will have 15 minutes to complete the activities in each pack, before a plenary to discuss how prepared they are for their exam. The packs contain a range of tasks including exam questions, marking exam questions, card sorts with key words and exploring photographs they have been given. All of the resources are hidden slides in the powerpoint. Please note, this lesson follows the same format at the ‘GCSE AQA Paper 2 Revision: Human’ lesson. The tasks are different, but you may be interested in purchasing this lesson if you find ‘GCSE AQA Paper 1 Revision: Physical’ works well.

Everything you will (probably) need in the classroom to know about Tsunamis. A 46 slide Power point on the subject - I was researching the topic for my Yr10's & also my IB2s (probably got a bit carried away). By cutting out the relevant bits, this could easily be adapted to form the basis of any KS3, 4 or 5 lesson on the topic.

This is a sequencing activity that asks the pupils to place in order the events that lead up to and follow a tsunami. It was a little bit of a challenge for the less able so I made the whole class do this activity in pairs and we watched a short video clip first to help the pupils understand the processes involved before starting. Activity worked well.
