A sequenced series of language lessons that culminates in a Big Write: an engaging fact file about tigers. The unit provides planned opportunities for oracy through Voice 21 strategies, alongside the development of reading and writing skills. Pupils practise retrieving information by scanning texts, explore the features of non-fiction writing, and build the vocabulary and knowledge needed for their final piece. The unit includes differentiated success criteria for assessment, teacher modelling, scanning and retrieval resources, and differentiated word banks to support learners at all levels.

This sequence of language lessons is based on the book Mr Chicken Goes to Paris by Leigh Hobbs and builds progressively towards a final ‘Big Write’, in which learners write a diary entry from the perspective of the main character. Throughout the unit, learners develop their oracy, reading and writing skills through engaging discussions, shared reading, vocabulary-building activities and structured writing opportunities. The sequence provides a range of supportive resources, including a word bank and a blank word web to help learners collect and organise ambitious vocabulary. To support learners of all abilities, the unit also includes four differentiated levels of success criteria, differentiated model texts, and a writing input table to scaffold planning and encourage independent writing. By the end of the sequence, learners will have developed the confidence and skills to write a detailed and engaging diary entry.

Learning Intention: To tell a story with a beginning, middle and end. This sequence of language lessons is designed for Year 2 and Year 3 learners and is based on the beautifully illustrated book The Journey Home by The Journey Home by Frann Preston-Gannon. The unit consists of six progressive lessons that develop the knowledge and skills needed for learners to produce a final ‘Big Write’ narrative. Throughout the sequence, learners are encouraged to build confidence in oracy, reading and writing through engaging discussions, shared reading, vocabulary exploration, and structured writing activities. Opportunities for independent research are included through links to the Hwb platform, allowing learners to deepen their understanding of the themes and contexts within the story. The culminating Big Write is thoughtfully divided into three lessons, enabling learners to plan, draft and edit their own narratives. A supporting resource sheet provides sentence starters, ambitious vocabulary and connectives to scaffold writing, while a blank word web offers opportunities for learners to collect and organise their own vocabulary throughout the unit. By the end of the sequence, learners will be able to structure and write a complete story with a clear beginning, middle and end, applying the language and storytelling techniques they have developed across the unit.
