I ran a series of lessons on diversity, which included looking at differences and prejudices that people may have. These powerpoints were intended to initiate discussion around disability -medical/social model, multicultural society - what is culture The worksheet on equality of gender was for a plenary. The body template was a starter for learners to draw/colour as themselves, then discuss differences in the group.
Simple starter, with word bank attached for differentiation. Used in Functional Skills English.
These resources were devised for the intitial lesson in a Preparation for Work Unit. They are suitable for learners with additional needs as they are writing templates and visual prompts. The first doc is a template for recording own skills and qualities, then the pictures (can be laminated) can be used as case studies, before recording skills and qualities for these on the second template.
I used these resources to develop awareness of autism in the group and wider school. First, we looked at the starter and learners had to guess the thing in common- autism. Then we watched the dvd about a young man with autism. Next, we talked about the awareness ribbon, and learners cut out the jigsaw template printed onto coloured card and annotated with the meaning of the ribbon for display. Finally, we made awareness ribbons following the given instructions (ribbon available on ebay) and distributed to raise awareness.
Theme: school uniform. Starter to initiate thoughts around point of view about uniform, followed by discussion. Powerpoint shows uniform around the world (can be added to by including further countries). Discussion about why uniform may be good/bad/useful. Persuasive techniques recap. Learners to then to choose for/against uniform in school, list main points, using persuasive techniques ( template for differentiation) followed by debate. Plenary checks retention of some persuasive techniques, to kept for further reference. Word bank for differentiation can be omitted.
Powerpoint of slides of front covers of magazines and newspapers to intiate discussion around who the target audience is. Can be extended for discussion around key features. Useful as starter or plenary.
Guess the famous people ppt starter.

This Powerpoint contains one key word slide, with a colourful photo' for learners to guess the meaning or as a discussion starter.
Images of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and The Hound of The Baskervilles, followed by techniques for creating suspense for learners to copy/discuss. I used this powerpoint to support reading from The Hound of the Baskervilles text, which I printed off and asked learners to highlight the key techniques used.
This powerpoint was used to link Gothic literature and art. The artist used is Henri Fuseli and the powerpoint contains some images to initiate discussion around what can be seen, and the typical features of this type of painting.
This sheet can be laminated on coloured card. The cards can be shuffled, then role play initiated by reading a card and asking learners to demonstrate the appropriated distance. I used these for Functional Skills Eng S and L.
This resource, from Teacher's TV, contains everything you need for a lesson on budgeting for a car and looking at borrowing money. There is a teacher's dvd with tips, and, for the lesson, a dvd, worksheets and handouts. I also made my own handouts of pictures of the cars for learners to annotate, which they enjoyed. I used this as part of a Foundation Learning Problem Solving unit, as the lesson looks closely at dilemmas involoved in purchasing a car, and weighing up pros and cons, such as insurance group, petrol usage, looks, size for parking, etc.
For PHSE, the starter is the cloze activity (differentiated included). Discussion follow, before reading the PDF on guidance for schools regarding young carers, then completing a template on what a school young carers policy should include in the learner's own words (eg a young carer being allowed to make &'phone calls home to check on wellbeing of a family member during the day). I supplemented this lesson by inviting a guest speaker from a young people&';s charity to talk to the group on this issue.
For National Pi Day in March last year, we had a fun day, when we watched the dvd clips about Pi (listed on the word doc as URLs), then designed mugs and t-shirts on the templates provided as a competition for a small prize. We made this day cross-curriculur by baking fruit pies with the Pi logo or the numbers 3.14 on top in pastry - hopefully the learners will not forget what Pi is now!
This link, to Teacher's TV, provides resources for a whole lesson on loving relationships and teenage pregnancy, particularly from the viewpoint of boys, which is unusual. There is a 15 min clip for teachers, with tips on carrying out the lesson. For the actual lesson, there is a short dvd clip, worksheets and handouts. I used this lesson as part of a Rights and Responsibilities unit, looking at the rights of young fathers. I have added a document of newspaper headlines for use as a starter discussion point and some other supporting worksheets.
This could be used as a starter activity. The learners cut out and match the pairs appropriately. It is intended to develop an understanding that there is more than just verbal communication; and sometimes other ways are more apprpropriate. I use it for Functional Skills English Level 1. I printed it on colored card for added visual interest. The cards could be laminated and distributed in evelopes to learners; or learners may enjoy cutting them out.
These handouts were designed to accompany a very basic lesson on sustainability. One was to check previous learning, one to assess learning on ways to protect the environment, and one was a wrap up for learners to label items made purely from recycled mate
I used this for Functional Skills Eng speaking and listening. Learners role-played given scenarios for memo-taking and recording the information they heard before relaying it to a third party.
