The Big Lunch is an idea from the Eden Project that aims to inspire millions of people across the UK to strengthen their social connections and do something positive for their community and for the planet. As an environmental charity, the Eden Project wants to help participants make their Big Lunch as planet friendly as possible. With that in mind, this complete KS2 lesson aims to help schools, teachers and their pupils consider what ‘greener’ might look like. What swaps can be made to make Big Lunch food planet-friendly? How can food waste be minimised? The plan is designed to be accessible and geared towards discussing and highlighting changes that can be made or actions which can be taken rather than being an in-depth dive into the topic of sustainable food systems. It taps into WWF’s Livewell diet as a simple way of framing the actions we can take. The children are invited to design their own Big Lunch menu based on the conversations they have had and finally, justify their choices.
