The lesson examines the physical and human attractions of Malham, then explores the positive and negative impacts of tourism: socially, environmentally and economically. The lesson was originally designed to be used with Edexcel Spec. A for the Tourist World Unit.
Infiltration rate experiment
The lesson is an opportunity to get out of the classroom and do some on site fieldwork. You will need some watering cans, 2 ltr drinks bottles or buckets of water. The sites in the PPt were photographs I took on my phone and uploaded, you will need to change this to suit your sites within your school grounds.
Managing desertification

Human processes that contribute to the desertification problem.
The lesson explores how human activity can negatively affect the environment.
Oxford flood defences
A case study of the flood defences at Oxford - The lesson explores the hard and soft engineering approaches used. Then the conflicts from each type of approach upon different groups of people.
Chengdu Mystery
This is aimed at getting the students to think about the impact their lifestyle choices can have on other people. An interesting discussion to have is to carry out a class poll of who has an old phone at home in a drawer that their shiny new one replaced. In a recent lesson a student owned up that between her and her brother and parents, there were 11 mobile phones out of use (but still working) on top on the 4 latest smart phone. The lesson can be as richly developed as you want it to be.
