CPD How to have Challenging and Powerful conversations

These resources come together as a CPD for delivering a session on Powerful Conversations in education. I am a teacher of 20+ years and I use this model as a blueprint when speaking to parents or to anyone where the conversation is challenging. Feel free to contact me using the details provided and I am happy to network and to support you in the delivery of this material. From this, you and your team will have a particular a structure to follow. Believe me, this works! A lot of my thinking and practice around having difficult conversations has come from my reading of a book by Chris Voss and Tahl Raz called “Never Split the Difference”. I’ve used quotes from the book as a guideline for holding difficult conversations with parents or for anyone.  From my experience many (but not all) challenging conversations are negotiations. We usually want parents to see our point of view and to come to our way of thinking. We usually want them to come on-board to our way of thinking. We are the professionals and we have a wealth of experience when it comes to understanding the typical outcomes of poor behaviour or less than good outcomes when it comes to a rift between parent and school values. We need to prepare to be bold and to ask for what we want. Take note of the below quote. “In this world, you get what you ask for; you just have to ask correctly. So, claim your prerogative to ask for what you think is right.” Ask difficult questions but phrase them in a clever way as outlined below. In my view we can be direct and we can have candour but it’s the way we “say it” and the way we “come across” that counts.

NEW COURSE AQA SCIENCE (TRIPLE AND DUAL SCIENCE) TRACKER + AUTO ANALYSIS If you purchase this please leave a review. This tracker is designed for the NEW GCSE in AQA TRIPLE AND DUAL SCIENCE. It is good for the separate courses of Biology, Physics and Chemistry but can also be used (without adjustment) for Dual science. If you track grades of 1-9 and use the fine grades of .1 .2 .3 then this will work for you. It has been built so that there are spaces for each of the disciplines of each science discipline. these are as follows Biology 1 Cell biology 2 Organisation 3 Infection and response 4 Bioenergetics 5 Homeostasis and response 6 Inheritance, variation and evolution 7 Ecology 8 Key ideas Chemistry 9 Atomic structure and the periodic table 10 Bonding, structure, and the properties of matter 11 Quantitative chemistry 12 Chemical changes 13 Energy changes 14 The rate and extent of chemical change 15 Organic chemistry 16 Chemical analysis (page 103) 17 Chemistry of the atmosphere 18 Using resources 19 Key ideas Physics 20 Energy 21 Electricity 22 Particle model of matter 23 Atomic structure 24 Forces 25 Waves 26 Magnetism and electromagnetism 27 Key ideas There is also room for the recording of one mock exam. The sheet automatically populates an analysis table so that you have always got a finger on the pulse for current attainment and gap analysis. Used well, this tracker can support effective planning and intervention. Teachers must enter the raw mark for each assessment as well as the 1-9 grade each raw mark accounts for. I have deliberately chosen not to automatically get the sheet to convert raw marks to grades as, at this time, they are likely to fluctuate once we learn more about the grade boundaries. If you choose to buy this resource I have added my contact details so that minor modifications can be made. I am available to work on these during the evening and at weekends only.
