KS3 ENERGY AND FOOD
In this lesson, you will:
compare the energy values of foods and fuels
compare the energy requirements of different activities.
Reqyuisition
heatproof mats, splints, coffee whitener (or sugar)
wide range of food labels, or make cards that include basic information about the energy per 100 g
laminated cards providing the energy in 100 g of different fuels (examples of values per 100 g: coal 2900 kJ, oil 4200 kJ, natural gas 5500 kJ, firewood 1600 kJ)
Give students a list of foods and fuels such as soups, crisps, ready meals, coal, oil, and so on. Ask students to work in pairs and predict the order of the foods and fuels in decreasing energy per 100 g. Put the labels of these foods and fuels around the room. Students record the energy per 100 g of each food and fuel and put them in order of decreasing energy.
