Square Numbers Investigation

A hands on and practical approach to introduce square numbers. The problem is open-ended and starts with building patterns. By the end of the lesson you model to the children how each number of cubes can be rearranged to form a square. How children lay out their learning is up to you but I have included guidance.

Dividing/Division on a numberline. GOLF

(0)
This is a great way for children to learn how to divide on a numberline through playing golf. The Notebook explains the story of a poor golfer who keeps taking too many shots to get his ball in the hole so the class must help him take fewer shots so he can stay in the competition. For their main challenge children can choose which score card they use to play their own golf. Challenge 1 - dividing by 3 and 6 Challenge 2 - dividing by 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 Challenge 3 - as above but with larger numbers. Children love competing against each other to play their round of golf in the least amount of shots as possible. This lesson can easily be stretched to two lessons. Reasoning questions also included on Notebook as well as on their score card. Documents easily adaptable to make the numbers more challenging/easier.
