Rather than telling them how to do a question the intention is to remind the students of some key points that will help them break down the problem for themselves. Try interrupting the class every 10 minutes or so, and run through a couple of the diagnostic questions. Hopefully they can encourage a discussion that will allow students to re-view vital information that will help them do the quiz successfully. Student version is designed for students to download onto a one to one tablet device so that they can progress through the tasks at a pace suitable for each individual (could be printed out as you work through each lesson). I have made this for my second top set year 11’s, who have already studied this a number of times in the past,. I have tried to put a focus on how questions involving whole numbers with algebraic fractions for the stronger students in the class.

I have put together a lesson that covers finding mental percentages with decimal answers, which is then followed by reverse percentages. I have found over the past couple of years that KS3 students are much better with mental percentages than what they were before the curriculum changes. The quiz attached was completed using socrative before starting the topic so I can assess what the students know, and adjust the plan according to that. Enjoy!
