A teacher-written sample essay for Edexcel’s Poems of the Decade task. The essay compares the anthology poem - Tishani Doshani’s ‘The Deliverer’ - with an unseen poem, ‘The Swing’ by Don Paterson. ‘The Deliverer’ is the only poem not to have appeared at all on the exam yet (not even on the specimen paper) so is very likely to be one of the options in 2026. I have also included a handout with the two poems printed for students to annotate. The essay addresses the following task: Compare the methods both poets use to explore tragic events.
