A group decision making activity that takes approx. 1 lesson to complete. Students need to work in groups to effectively manage tourism in the Lake District around Ullswater.
In this scenario, nothing exists around Ullswater apart from some houses where local people live. The aim is to attract tourists to stay, eat and spend money in Ullswater. Students must work together to decide which items to purchase from the list based on their impact scores. Each item available to purchase has an Environmental Impact (En), Economic Impact (Ec), Tourist Revisit Impact (Tr), and Local People Impact (Lp) score. Students must consider these scores carefully when deciding what to purchase.
The objectives of the task are to:
Protect the natural environment
Help boost the local economy
Make Ullswater an attractive place for tourists to visit
Not negatively impact the lives of local people
The activity stimulates discussion about the positive and negative impacts of tourism on the local economy, the local people and on the environment.
