Neutralisation – Exploring Everyday Neutralisation Reactions
Description:
This engaging, research-based science lesson introduces pupils to real-life applications of neutralisation reactions. Originally designed for KS4 Special Needs learners studying Entry Pathways Unit 6205: Making Chemical Compounds, it’s equally effective for KS3/KS4 classes learning about the relevance of acids, bases, and neutralisation in everyday life.
Lesson Overview:
Starter/Recap: Pupils answer “What is made when you mix an acid with a base?” and begin identifying useful examples of neutralisation.
Main Task: Pupils complete a digital research task (Google Classroom-ready template included). For each example, they:
Describe how the reaction is used
Explain why it is useful
Give an example reaction
Insert a relevant image
Topics Include:
Fertilisers made from nitric acid
Table salt production
Lime used to neutralise acidic soil
Waste management applications
Tooth decay prevention
Plenary: Pupils reflect on their learning by writing three takeaways on a Post-It or digital comment.
Also Includes:
Editable Google Classroom template
Example slide to model expectations
Literacy, ICT, and science cross-curricular links
Ideal For:
KS3 and KS4 Science
Entry Level and SEN learners
Distance learning or digital science projects
Cover lessons and independent work
