This paper explains why schools organised on same-age practices fail in key areas. The Vertical (mixed-age) system wins in all key areas but only when systems thinking principles are understood. The biggest setback to education in the USA is its middle / junior high system that disrupts learning relationships and distorts positive psychology. If readers find gaps or the claims too fanciful or want to learn more, please contact me and visit my website www.verticaltutoring.org
Quiz for tutor groups..Of course the PE Dept needs to work out the answers first!
I have updated this topic from my book to try and give clarification. To manage these management principles requires training. www.verticaltutoring.org People who think horizontal systems can work are wrong and demonstrably so...contact me if you think otherwise!

This paper says the faults in education are systems faults. It addreses some year 7 issues such as exclusion from VT and the proliferation of learning to learn. It also sets out clearly how schools can best improve using VT and VTe (Vertical Teaching)
This article shows how VT schools can best deliver and see how Gifted and Talented policies are easier in VT schools. I was delighted to work with the author as an adviser on this issue. Again, VT shows easier ways of working and great common sense in its approach.

This is an updated verison of a previous power point on Vertical Tutoring based on Covey's ideas. Sadly many schools mess up the change to VT because of what Shukla calls, arrogance and ignorance (not the fault of schools). VT requires a deep understanding of Systems Thinking, Customer Services and Ingroup loyalty moral psychology (training). Contact me and visit my website at www,verticaltutoring.org to learn more.
This article appeared (amended) in the SEAL journal some time ago. I want disbelievers to read it. It is about schools and systems and why they are what they are. I was angry when I wrote this...still am
VT as a transformational system. The faults within Horizontal year systems. Remedies
This book explains why Year systems cannot work and sets out the values of VT. It is a book on school management and improvement and explains how schools need to understand the psychology of groups, Systeme Thinking and Customer Care. It also calls on Deming. The book is a respoonse to requests from teachers, PGCE students and MA students doing research
Here is number 5 in the series for mixed age groups
This 3rd draft updates the existing copy on the TES site. It sets out to explain the connection between VT and wellbeing (happiness) and is another indictment of horizontal systems. It argues that learnng and teaching 'programmes' require a group learning support platform in place before or instead of programmes not after. It plots out how VT is all about wellbeing.
