Sentence Stairs

(0)
Great for sentence development in narratives or descriptive/description writing. Can easily be adapted for any age range or key stage. Resource scaffold to develop more thought-out sentences. Put this together as a way of giving children prompts. Children are given a ‘basic’ sentence to start with and they had a blank template. At each step they have to use/add what I ask them to. In the example, they were asked to think about the impact on the reader through their use of language, asked to use a relative clause, use the word tenebrous as this was one of the words of our learning journey and to start their sentence in a different way as some children keep starting sentences with I and The.

Character description map scaffold

(0)
Resource to develop character description and development. Useful as part of the planning process or as a stand-alone character description. Put a lot of thought into how characters are developed in a story. Too often, children write some great descriptions and develop character personality and persona at the start of the story and what follows is just monotone with no further development. Putting together this scaffold to ‘map’ a character through writing descriptions of them at different key points and events. Scaffold will encourage pupils to consider description, emotions, speech and actions during key events and hopefully illustrate that there are many layers and personas to a character depending on what is happening and who they are interacting with. This will prompt some great discussion on what impressions of the character are given to the reader and how this could be done through use of writing tools and language. Example and blank editable template in files. Example based on descriptions of Lucy from the Wolves in the Walls. Template is easily adaptable in terms of adding images, changing size of text boxes, changing headings etc.
