Afghan Kites

This resource helps pupils explore the importance of identity and tradition for themselves and also refugee and migrant communities. It considers this through the lens of Afghan Kite Running and the book “After Tomorrow” by Gillian Cross. You will need a copy of “After Tomorrow” to access the resource fully. Pupils consider what it might be like to be a refugee and the things that might be important to them if they were to undertake such a journey themselves. Pupils will then consider why kite-running and flying might be especially important to refugee communities from Afghanistan. This resource was created in partnership with the Hear My Voice exhibition (which will be on display in Ely Cathedral over October half term in 2022) and The Clewer Initiative. At the end of the learning plan, pupils can design a mini-kite of their hopes and dreams. If they would like their kite to form part of the exhibition then they can bring it to Ely Cathedral Monday-Wednesday of half term or you can post them to Kites Exhibition, Learning Dept, Chapter House, The College, Ely CB74DL or email digital copies to Learning@elycathedral.org
