In this unit, students will explore the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) to understand how emerging economies shape global development. Through the lens of human and physical geography, students will investigate unique opportunities and challenges each country faces. They will examine key issues such as natural resource management, urbanisation, inequality, and the role of transnational corporations (TNCs). The unit includes lesson, assesments and homeworks. Lessons include: L1 - Introduction to the BRICS L2 - Brazil - Natural resources exploitation. L3 - Russia - Natural gas (includes slides acknowledging the Russia / Ukraine war but only briefly and can be excluded although questions always arise during the lesson). L4 - India - Inequality in Mumbai L5 - China - Migration / Urbanisation L6- South Africa - Diamonds and decisions (Debeer’s new diamond mine should it have gone ahead? L7-8 -BRICS and TNC’s (TNCs mentioned throughout topic but focused on in this lesson) Students will develop key geographical skills, including map interpretation (in Lesson 2-7), data presentation (choropleth and GIS mapping), and decision-making based on evidence. By the end of the unit, students will have a clearer understanding of the varied pathways recent countries have taken to develop and how these shape the modern world.

Made Jan 2025 - This is a scheme of work created for Year 9 students studying the Horn Of Africa. It includes the below lessons plus and end of topic assessment and a draft mid-topic assessment. There are also multiple opportunities for extended writing which could be “formally” assessed. This topic has a mixture of more Human and physical Geography lessons. Based on 75 minute lessons these are quite strong but they can be easily cut down. There are also often options of tasks which can be selected to best suit your students. Lesson 1 - Introduction to the Horn of Africa (What is it like? Where is it? Which countries are included?) Lesson 2- Why is it important globally? (Trade, Diaspora, Aid) Lesson 3 - The “borders” in the horn of Africa Lesson 4 - Rainfall in Ethiopia (physical) Lesson 5 - Drought in Ethiopia (human) Lesson 6 - Somalian Pirates (Could be moved earlier) Lesson 7 - The Blue Nile and regional Conflict Lesson 8 - Urban Africa It includes a range of tasks in each lesson (videos with questions, mapping tasks, sorting tasks, comprehension question, evaluation and reflection, extended writing including letter writing, diagram drawing and more!).

This is the first of 8 lessons on the Horn of Africa. It is an introductory lesson with info sheets about the different countries of the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti). It includes a mapping task, comprehension task, reflection questions and a flags quiz and a homework video task. There is a also an alternative group / partner task where country students can work together to gather and then teach each other about the different countries in the Horn of Africa.
